Who is running this project?

Is this project affliated with anyone?

No. Although I am a PhD student at University, this project is not affliated with my University. It's simply a small project I'm running in my spare time.

Do you collect any personal information?

  • Your email address is stored securely in a file while it awaits my approval to send out an invite. When an invite is sent out, your email address is wiped from the system and a unique random code is stored instead. Your email address is then only stored in the server security logs.
  • Your IP address and user agent are stored in the web server logs.
  • Any metadata attached to picture you upload is deleted (e.g. geotags, camera make/model, etc).
  • Attribution: The attribution name you give (this can be done once your invite request is accepted) will be released publicly, so make sure you do not include any personal information you aren't happy with being released.

Can I withdraw?

Absolutely - there's no obligation to take part at all, and you can stop at any time.

To delete all your uploaded files and/or request the deletion of your email address from the logs, please get in touch via any methods mentioned on my website. You can request the deletion of the following:

  • Your invite
  • Your email address from the server logs
  • Submitted images: Any images uploaded more than 1 week ago can't be deleted because they may have been released to the public (1 week grace time is given). If you request deletion of images, then any images that have not been released publicly will be deleted.

Make sure you include the URL from the invite email! I can't help you without it.

Can you guarantee the AI will work?

Since I don't have the dataset yet, I can't be certain of whether I'll actually be able to train an AI. Similar things have been done before, so I'm reasonably confident it'll work though.

Will I be able to use the AI for free once it's trained?

Absolutely. I intend to update this website with the AI so that you can run it in your web browser and identify as many pictures as you like (I intend to use Tensorflow.js for building and training the AI, so any pictures you run through it will be analysed by the AI directly on your device - they will not be uploaded to the server at all).

Will images I upload be publicly viewable?

Yes, they will be released under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International licence. This is for multiple reasons, including increasing transparency and allowing the AI I train to be replicated by others..

However, all the EXIF data attached to images you upload is stripped (except the ICC colour profile) before uploading begins (and again after uploading, just in case) and images are also resized to 512x512, so no personal information will be present.

If you've made a mistake and uploaded something that contains personal information, please get in touch.

I'm a researcher. Can I have access to the dataset please?

Sure thing! The dataset will be released once there's enough data to be useful (see the homepage for current statistics).

It's worth noting that the dataset will be released under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) Licence, which means that if you release any derivative works (including any AIs you train), they must both include attribution (this will be explained in detail when the dataset is released) and be released under the same or a compatible licence.

For example, you could train an AI and release it under CC-BY-SA, but you would not be able to sell the any AIs you train for money.
